How to check if a GSTIN is correct
A GSTIN is 15 characters: state code, PAN, entity number, Z, and a check character. One wrong letter means your buyer cannot get credit, so check it before you bill.
Step by step
- Type or paste the GSTIN. Spaces and dashes are ignored; small letters become capitals.
- Read the result. A green tick: well formed and the last character matches. A red cross says what is wrong.
- Check many at once. Paste a list into Check many GSTINs at once and download the result as CSV.
Worked example
03AAFFG5678L1Z2: 03 = Punjab, AAFFG5678L = PAN (4th letter F = firm), 1 = first registration in the state, Z, check character 2. Typing 03AAFFG5678L1Z3 shows "The last character should be 2".
Common mistakes and how to fix them
- Thinking a correct format means an active registration. The check proves only the number is well formed; see the next article to check the status on the portal.
